The Santa Barbara Art Association was formed in 1952 at a meeting in the home of the late Douglass Parshall. Joining him as first directors of the organization were Joseph E. Knowles, Standish Backus, Jr., Jeffrey C. Harris, and Clarence K. Hinkle with Wright Ludington serving as the first president. Wright Ludington served twice as president as did Douglas Parshall and Joseph E. Knowles. There were about fifty members the first year. Their purpose was then, as it is now, to provide the people of this area a unique opportunity to view a number of juried free art shows per year and to foster and support art education in our community.
Today, the membership is about 540. This number includes past presidents who enjoy honorary life memberships as do artists who have been members for over 30 years. Although most members reside in the Tri-County area, several live in central and northern California and some outside the state. Any person or organization wishing to help support the efforts of SBAA to improve the cultural, philanthropic, and art educational opportunities in our city is welcome to become a Patron Member of the association.
The Santa Barbara Art Association is a registered, nonprofit organization fulfilling its nonprofit requirements by presenting shows, sponsoring workshops, and awarding the scholarships. Each year, through the Patron’s Fund, the Santa Barbara Art Association awards scholarships in the name of Douglas Parshall and Wright Ludington to deserving Fine Art students at UCSB, SBCC, and Westmont College. Our support to local High Schools is provided through the Student Art Fund (SAF).
